Atomic’s History

70’S AND 80’S Our Roots

ATOMIC Founder, Tom McPhillips, started painting backdrops and scenery for theater, opera and television productions, and opened his own studio in 1976. Before long he branched out and began designing for live shows and music videos by Culture Club, Paul McCartney, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest and many more!

1994–1999 Our Philosophy Catches On

Tom’s work was seen on tour and in the studio with some of rock n’ roll’s biggest artists: Michael Jackson, The Who and Paul McCartney. Even better, his designs became known in the industry for their ease of use, fast set-up, creative construction techniques and innovative materials.

2000–2005 Modular Systems Are Born

ATOMIC launched a rental division dubbed Modular Systems and began shipping innovative, patented modular scenery and soft goods all over the world. Interchangeable products and endless combinations help designers make any event an ATOMIC event. Packs small, plays BIG was born.

2006–2011 Launching Into New Markets

Corporate marketers turned to ATOMIC for help creating pop-up stores, immersive brand environments and live experiences that engage their fans. Nike, Target and Victoria’s Secret joined the client list, alongside Turner Television and CBS Networks.

SuperZipper and SuperLever products were born into the Modular Systems family of products, showcasing a versatile array of patented modular offerings.

2012–2017 Production Services Accelerates

The ATOMIC production team grew and started producing more top-notch events for some of the world’s biggest brands. Media powerhouses Turner Television and Hulu turned to ATOMIC to run their annual Upfront events. Global PR agencies began hiring us to create unforgettable experiences for their clients.

2018–2023 ATOMIC Expands

ATOMIC set out to explore innovative ways to apply our expertise in constructing complex, rapidly deployable, and quick-to-assemble designs. This drive to innovate opened up new markets where we could effectively leverage our unique skills and continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

2024–Present ATOMIC turns 30!

2024 marked three decades of dreaming, designing, and deploying for the team at ATOMIC.
